Photos Coming Soon Morrisonville Farmers Cooperative 2019 Crop Tour By: Taylor Kusterman Edited-Whitney Partlow ENTERING EASTERN INDIANA Clinton/Hillsdale/Cayuja/Perrysville, IN Beans
- Fully canopied, 45-50% excellent, 10% very poor, beans 7 to 14 days behind IL, remainder average. Short.
Corn
- 80% tasseled, remainder should tassel in next 10-15 days, 55% good to excellent, 15% poor, remainder average to above average.
- Not similar to IL in fact the crop is not wavy or very uneven. More uniformity through fields. Corn 7 days ahead of IL. Irrigating.
State Line City/Williamsport, IN (20 to 30 miles from previous area) Beans
Corn
Boswell/Oxford, IN Beans
- 2 foot tall, blooming. Look even across field. 3 weeks behind where they should be. Stands are very good.
Corn
- What appears to be half planted field(s). 2 weeks behind average. Healthy looking, good stands.
Monticello/Idaville, IN (Hanenkratt Grain Co. Inc.) VISIT & Thoughts: Daniel Hanenkratt (President/Treasurer) Beans
- Crop is 4 to 6 weeks behind normal. Doesn’t expect to harvest any beans until 3rd week of Oct. Most beans were planted 2nd week of June. Still has hope for it to a good crop. Expected yields to be 40 to 60 bushels per acre.
Corn
- 3rd of crop was mudded in May. The other 2/3 first 10 days of June. Was shocked but very pleased with how crop has reacted. Could really use a shot of rain. Yields expects to be 150-200 per acre. Basis levels extremely high compared to average for this time of year. Thinks back to 2012 when he was paying 10 over the Dec. for fall delivery corn. Around Monticello, IN the end users consume 500 thousand bushels of corn a day.
Medaryville, IN Field(s) with holes and low spots. Uneven. Grand Rapids, MI (area) Beans
- Stands are very thin and sickly looking. Very late planting, far behind. Need rain. Best guess is crop produces 30-50 bushels an acre.
Corn
- Very thin stands. Yellowish coloring to the plant. Needs rain in this area. Very late. Will struggle to black layer.
Mason/Leslie/Pleasant Lake, MI VISIT (in field) Beans
- In this part of MI, very healthy. At worst case scenario, 15 days behind where they should be. Blooming well. 95% canopied. Looks to be average yields for this area. 45-65 bushels per acre.
Corn
- Foot and ½ tall to tasseling. Very thin stands. Yellowing. Needs a drink of water. Very bad stage for time of stress. Doesn’t look very favorable. Will struggle to get to black layer if it even gets there at all.
Wheat
- 50% harvested. Working hard to get it out.
Farmer (visit in field) - Scott
- The wheat crop is not worth a cuss. $5.00 wheat does not cover the cost of fuel, time, equipment wear and tear, seed and fertilizer. I’m losing money. Scott is a smaller farmer, is not willing to pay the higher cash rent prices of “$250.00 an acre”. Scott feels the struggle from the crops, the money that will come from this to subsidize the farmer and help offset the losses from lack of yield will not reach this far north to help him and his fellow farmers. Scott also felt corn and bean yields would be all over the place. He stated farmers were still planting corn on July 4th knowing that it wouldn’t be ready for harvest/resale but have to have something to feed their livestock.
Ottawa Lake, MI Beans
- Still the same as before. Few bad spots here and there. Stands are solid, still a little bit curious to where the yields will come out around this area. Overall, decent.
Corn
- Have seen several fields not planted. Overall, on the southeast side of MI – it appears the crop is going to be out there. I think the crop yields are going to be hard to determine until in the field like IL.
Overall – Beans 20% very poor. 30% poor. 40% good. 10% good to excellent. Corn 15% very poor. 30% poor. 25% good. 30% good to excellent. ENTERING OHIO Bowling Green/Cygnet/North Baltimore, OH Field after field after field not planted. Certainly a lot of PP here. Fields that planted with beans/corn WAY behind. Terrible looking, spotty fields, ½ green and ½ not planted. Overall – Bean crop is 10% good to excellent. 30% good. 30% poor. 30% very poor. Corn crop is 10% good to excellent. 30% good. 30% poor. 30% very poor. ENTERING INDIANA Sunman/Milan/Dillsboro/Versailles, IN Beans
- Thin stands. Have not seen any fields in this area over a foot tall. Sickly looking. Nothing blooming. Poor crops.
Corn
- Decent stands. For the most part good coloring. Ranging from 4ft to 8ft tall and tasseling. Very spotty. Quite a few fields gone unplanted.
Canaan/Vevay, IN Beans
- Very good in this part of IN. Most fields 2-3 ft. tall plus. Blooming. Look to be along with rest of the nation – 3 weeks behind to a month.
Corn
- Very good in this part of IN. Most of all of the corn was tasseling. 7 to 8 ft. tall. Also about 3 weeks behind average.
ENTERING KENTUCKY Sanders/Ghent/Carrollton, KY Beans
- In this part of Kentucky, crops look very good. Beans looking the same as when exiting the south of IN. Lush green and all canopied over the rows. Great stands, healthy looking crop.
Corn
- Similar to beans. 90% tasseled. Very green, thick stands, looks to be on average crop here. Expected to see a little bit more damage along the river, but actually some of the better crops in KY.
ENTERING INDIANA Scottsburg/Salem/Mitchell, IN VISIT – Scott Warren/Jacob Warren/Dave Moon (Farmers) These farmers have done several acres of prevent plant this year. Felt like the early corn was going to 20-25% less yield than last year. Beans going to 20-25% less than last year. Last year’s yield on corn was around 180. Overall – Beans 15% very poor. 20% poor. 35% good. 30% good to excellent. Corn 10% very poor. 20% poor. 45% good. 25% good to excellent. Bloomington/Bowling Green, IN Beans
- Great looking crops here. All green and all solid stands. Anywhere from 2-foot-tall to 4 foot tall. All rows are covered and getting plenty of sun.
Corn
- Corn 90% tasseled. Dark green thick stands. Was surprised to see it this good on this stretch of the road. 35 miles and all very solid stands and not a lot of low spots here.
